Trouble Shooting Printing Problems
SmartCopy
forms are created in the Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF).
PDF represents text and graphics by using the imaging model of the
PostScript language. For more information, see the Portable
Document Format Reference Manual, available from the Adobe web site
(www.adobe.com)
The individual
SmartCopy
forms in PDF format are able to be viewed and printed under Windows,
Macintosh, and other operating system platforms. However, the
SmartCopy
program software is only supported under the Microsoft Windows operating
system platform.
Windows System Requirements
Windows 98, 98SE, Millennium Edition, NT,
4.0 with service pack 5, 2000, or XP
Intel Pentium processor 200MHz or faster
64 MB Ram
24 MB of available hard-disk space
4x CD-ROM drive or faster
800x600 display
Windows compatible mouse
Windows compatible printer (Laser printer recommended)
General Guidelines
A previous version of Acrobat Reader may need to
be uninstalled before version 5.0 may work properly. If you are
unable to view or print the
SmartCopy
forms, it may be necessary to uninstall all copies of Adobe Acrobat
Reader, and then reinstall Reader by reinserting the
SmartCopy
CD-ROM in the computer disk drive.
Printing Problems in Windows
1. Page Prints Off-Center
Certain DeskJet and other non-PostScript printers have printer
drivers that do not have consistent margins all the way around the page.
The left and right values generally are equivalent, but the top and
bottom are sometimes quite different. There is no certain fix for
this problem. however, by releasing the printer margins in the
printer setup program (changing the margins to their widest, most
expanded setting) it may be possible to remedy this problem. If
you are unsure how to change the printer margins, contact your printer
manual or printer manufacturer for instructions.
2. Page Prints Too Small or Too Large
There is no sure fix for this problem. The printer driver
solely controls the print size. The Acrobat program scales the PDF
to the current paper size. Make sure that the paper size is set
for 8.5" x 11" and either turn on or turn off the "Fit to Page" option
in the printer settings. Try printing several test copies.
Once with "Fit to Page" selected, once with "Fit to Page" unselected.
If this does not solve the problem, you may want to try to install a
different printer driver.
3. Page is Incomplete or Partially Printed
If you are printing a
SmartCopy
form to a non-PostScript printer with a small amount of Random Access
Memory (RAM), for example, 2 Megabytes (MB), the printer may run out of
memory and print only a partial page. Try these fixes to see if
any may work, otherwise, you may have to upgrade the printer memory, the
hard drive memory, or both.
To print at 300 d.p.i., the printer should have at least 2 MB of RAM.
To print at 600 d.p.i., the printer should have 4 to 6 MB of RAM.
Change the print resolutionin the printer setup to something lower.
For example, from 600 d.p.i. resolution to 300 d.p.i.
Use the "Print as Image" setting in the print menu.
If your printer has a "Page Protection mode," ENABLE IT.
Make sure your computer has plenty of hard disk space and no other
programs are running at the same time the
SmartCopy
program is running. If you are running other programs, quit them
and re-run the
SmartCopy
program. Adobe recommends that you have 25 MB of free hard disk
space for virtual memory management.
Turn off your printer for at least 15 seconds to flush its memory, then
retry to print from the
SmartCopy
program. If this does not work, try exiting from Windows, turning
off boththe computer and the printer, turning them both on again, and
retrying to print.
4. Print Quality is Jagged or Muddy
If your print quality leaves something to be desired, try these
fixes:
Use ONLY the "Print as Image" option in the print setup menu.
Modify the print setting to use the Raster mode rather than the Vector
mode. Print one test page for each setting.
Try changing the fonts setting to bitmap fonts rather than outline
fonts. (See your printer manual for details.)
Test a page with the "Use Printer Halftone Screens" selected in the
print setup dialog box. If you do not select this option, the
halftones are printed using halftone information from the PDF file.
Test a page with the print resolution set to a LOWER setting. For
example, if you are currently set to print at 600 d.p.i., lower the
resolution to 300 d.p.i. The available options may vary with
different printers and drivers. See your printer manual for
details.
5. Characters Do Not Print
If characters drop out when you print, try the following:
If your printer has a PostScript option, sue the PostScript option.
Select bitmap fonts instead of outline fonts. (See your printer
manual for instructions.)
Switch the Document Defaults option (if available) from Print Text as
Graphics from "off" to "on."
6. Page Prints too Slowly
Your
SmartCopy
forms will print fast on fast printers, and slowly on slow printers.
The print speed depends primarily upon the speed of the printer.
Try printing using a different printer. Your
SmartCopy
forms have been print-optimized to print quickly on most printers.
You may try alternatively selecting and deselecting "Print as Image" in
the Print dialog box, to see if the print speed changes.
Hewlett Packard printers do not support PostScript, including but not
limited to: Laser Jet 5L, 6L, and 1100, may have delayed printing.
To correct this problem, contact Hewlett Packard Technical Support.
The following procedure may solve this printing problem: Change to
Raster in the Graphics Mode section, and True Type as Graphics in the
Text Mode section. Change spoof setting to RAW.
7. Non-Specific Print Problems
Make sure to select the "Print as Image" option on the print
settings menu.
Make sure you have installed the most current print driver for your
printer.
To check the version of most print drivers:
-
Chose start > Settings > Printers.
-
Right-click your printer, then choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
-
Click the Paper tab, then click About.
Contact your printer manufacturer, or look for specific information on
the manufacturer's Web site.
